2019-20 Expert Panel Activities

Activity Dashboard

Welcome to the official expert panel workspace for the 2019-20 State of XR and Immersive Learning project! The Immersive Learning Network (iLRN) has partnered with IEEE ICICLE, EDUCAUSE, and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) to create iLRN’s inaugural State of XR and Immersive Learning Report, which combines a systematic review and synthesis of the scholarly evidence and knowledge base on XR and immersive learning with a Delphi-inspired environmental scanning and forecasting exercise in the vein of the well-known Horizon Project. From late July through early November 2019, an esteemed global expert panel of educators, researchers, technologists, education leaders, and others will leverage this workspace to openly discuss their perspectives and research on applications of immersive learning technologies across all learning sectors. These discussions will be the springboard for the research and production of an official report that showcases the findings — currently slated for public release in early 2020.

Overview of Expert Panel Activities

The Expert Panel’s role in the systematic review component of the project will largely entail suggesting and reviewing research that is indicative of “what works” for creating effective and engaging XR and immersive learning experiences. Panelists are asked to continually be on the lookout for relevant research for sharing with the panel, and to assist in distilling from the findings of that research evidence-based principles and guidelines that will form the beginnings of an emerging knowledge base to help guide and inform practice in the field. They are also encouraged to consider the implications for future research (i.e., areas in need of further exploration, investigation, and/or development).
For the Horizon-style component of the project, the Expert Panel activities consist of several phases, beginning with an orientation or “Setting the Tone” phase in which panelists will read introductory papers, reports, media articles, and other resources curated by the project team. They will supplement those resources with other seminal content and respond to new content suggested by other panelists. The “Setting the Tone” phase will be followed by three successive rounds in which the panelists first respond to different prompts linked to the project’s research questions, and then engage in a dedicated interactive period in which they must specifically respond to each other’s ideas to build a conversation. In the final phase, the panelists will vote to determine the topics and issues that will form the basis of the final report.
